DR. ALISON KIM SHAN WEE

Dr. Alison Wee joined the University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) in Dec 2020. Prior to this, she obtained her BSc (2009) and PhD degrees (2013) from the National University of Singapore, NUS. She was a postdoctoral fellow at Chiba University in Japan (2014) and the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden in China (2014 – 2015). From 2016 – 2020, She led the Ecological Genomics Team as an Associate Professor in the College of Forestry at Guangxi University (China). She received the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science (Malaysia) award in 2022 for her work in environmental DNA in Malaysian mangroves. Her core research interest is in the biogeography, ecology and conservation of coastal ecosystems. In March 2023 and Feb 2025, she chaired and organized the International Symposium on Environmental DNA for Conservation and Biomonitoring in Southeast Asia in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Her research has been supported by SEAMEO BIOTROP, the Ministry of Higher Education in Malaysia, and the Asia Pacific Network for Global Change Research, among others. She is also an editorial board member of Integrative Conservation and an associate editor for Frontiers in Conservation Science. To date, Alison Wee has supervised and graduated two PhD students and five MSc students.
